April 2024 Investment Lessons: March Madness

As unlikely as the comparison might be, March Madness provides valuable lessons for investors. Following the pattern of years past, the 2024 edition of March Madness is filled with surprising events and outcomes.

The tournament includes sixty-four teams, each with fewer than twelve players participating in each game. The information gathered from each player’s and team’s performance over the last four and a half months provides valuable insights for predicting likely outcomes.

Yet, as we approach the Final Four, none of the twenty-two million brackets in the ESPN tournament challenge have successfully predicted the winners of every game. If you add the betting odds used by Las Vegas, you will find fewer successfully predicted winners.

The over fifteen thousand companies listed in the stock markets worldwide make predicting the winners and losers in the stock market much more challenging than March Madness. Each of these publicly traded companies is much more complex than a team of twelve basketball players. These companies are involved in more than two teams competing over 40 minutes.

So, what lesson does March Madness teach us about investing? Betting on companies to beat the market is costly and unlikely to succeed.

What’s better? Broadly diversified portfolios are a good start. Using factors grounded in fundamental economic concepts to build diversified portfolios that systematically capture higher returns is better. Managing these portfolios with low transaction costs is best.
